Insomnia? Trouble unwinding when it is time for bed? No worries, you are not alone. According to a study from researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University Of Pennsylvania, about 25% of Americans experience acute insomnia each year.1 Cannabinoid (CBD) may be the answer you have been looking for. The Cannabis plant has long been used for its medicinal benefits dating back to ancient times. In fact, Cannabis is one of the five essential plants mentioned in the Atharvaveda, a Hindu text dating back to around 1500 BC.

Some people are hesitant to try CBD because they are afraid of the psychoactive properties that occur with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but the properties found in CBD are nonpsychoactive. This is because different strains are grown with varying amounts of THC and CBD. Hemp plants are grown for their fibers and high levels of CBD that is extracted to make oil. Marijuana plants have higher concentrations of THC.2 Therefore, CBD is safe to be taken to aid in sleep.

A story about a long-time sufferer of insomnia published by The Huffington Post describes one insomniac’s journey to sleep with CBD. She had tried everything on the market, including Klonopin, but they either didn’t work or had ill effects the following day. Granted, she didn’t get her hopes up too much given her history with other sleep remedies but decided to give CBD a try. After trying CBD, she was able to relax her mind and body allowing her to fall asleep quickly and wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day. Prior to this story, The Huffington Post published another report in 2017 from a clinical psychologist and board-certified sleep specialist explaining that there is research to suggest that CBD can be beneficial for rest as it has the ability to reduce anxiety, which is crucial when trying to treat sleep difficulties and improving sleep quality. Along with aiding in relieving patients of insomnia, he went on to describe the many other benefits including treating depression, its pain-relieving properties and helping people that suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Skin Health

CBD oil is well-known for its pain alleviating properties and its useful benefits of helping relieve anxiety, but many people aren’t aware of the beauty benefits associated with it. CBD oils have the ability to alleviate skin conditions like acne, dry skin, and eczema.

In 2009, Trends in Pharmacological Sciences published an article about the endogenous cannabinoid system (often referred to as ECS or endocannabinoids), named for the plant that led to its discovery. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body. They serve several functions, but scientists have also discovered that they play a role in skin health. Endocannabinoids control how rapidly your skin cells reproduce, which cells survive and how your immune system interacts with your skin cells.

Problems with acne have long plagued many people, but even with the multitude of acne products on the market, there still doesn’t seem to be a definitive cure for it. CBD oil has been found to be a viable treatment for acne due to its anti-inflammatory effects and how it regulates sebum production. Sebum is a waxy, oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous gland. Its purpose is to keep the skin and hair moisturized, but for some people those glands enlarge and produce more sebum than necessary, causing acne. Sebum production is affected by hormones, pituitary, and adrenal gland disorders, medications and many other factors. The Journal of Clinical Investigation performed a study to see if CBD oil would normalize the “pro-acne agent”. Positive effects were found to help control acne.

To use CBD oil on the skin, it is best to mix it with a carrier oil such as argan oil or shea butter. After mixing equal parts, apply directly to the skin.
