If you’ve ever trained for a marathon, a triathlon or worked out extra hard at the gym, you know that muscle fatigue and soreness feeling. Those sore muscles are often felt to be a reward after a hard workout. We’ve all probably experienced sore muscles at one time or another. Muscle soreness associated with exercise is known as delayed onset muscle soreness or DOMS making it difficult to walk, reduce your strength or make your life uncomfortable for a few days. DOMS occurs for days after exercise due to swelling in the muscle compartment. The body’s natural defense against the swelling is a surge of white blood cells, prostaglandins, and other nutrients and fluids that flow to the muscles to repair the damage after a tough workout. The reason muscle soreness is worse several days after a workout is because the swelling and inflammation can build up for days after a workout. In order to continue to train, you must properly recover because this is just as important as the workout itself.
- Replenish lost fluids. Water is crucial to overall good health, but is especially important to aid in muscle soreness, as it not only replenishes lost fluids, it helps to remove toxins. A good rule of them for everyone is half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weight 120 pounds, you should drink 60 ounces of water each day. Athletes should drink closer to their body weight in ounces.
- Replenish nutrients with healthy foods that are high-quality protein and carbohydrates.
- Incorporate at least one yoga or stretching day into your weekly routine. This will help alleviate muscle tension lessening soreness.
- Since CBD oil is believed to be one of the best anti-inflammatories, it only makes sense that it will help muscle soreness and fatigue. Unfortunately, there is basically no research on the topic. However, an article published by US News in May 2018, an exercise scientist and director of the Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory at Colorado State University, Thorsten Rudrof, stated that he has seen a dramatic increase in the number of older adults and collegiate and professional athletes consuming CBD edibles and oils. Some people say that CBD reduces the body’s tendency to break down tissues and promote muscle growth.
